Who says Freedom Florence is an exceptional world-class sports complex? In 2008, Freedom Florence was inducted into the "Carolinas National Softball Association Hall of Fame." Other impressive awards earned by Freedom Florence include the "Award for Excellence" from the Southern Softball Asscoiation of America; the "Distinguished Service Award" from the U.S. Specialty Sports Association; the "National Park Award" from the National Softball Association; and the "National Facilities Award for Large Sports Complexes" from the Sportsplex Operators and Developers Association. FLORENCE RED WOLVES . . . "baseball the way it ought to be!" A great place for family fun . . . as American as baseball and apple pie (and popcorn, corn dogs, cotton candy, fireworks, autographs, and the "chicken dance," too). A college summer league of the Coastal Plain League. A place where college baseball all-stars from around the nation showcase their talent for professional scouts, improve their technical skills, and gain experience in a real minor league atmosphere from June through August. One of Florence's favorite pastimes!
FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY PATRIOTS . . . an excellent intercollegiate sports program providing "on the edge of your seat" entertainment for the whole family. The Patriots have a rich athletics tradition winning 5 national championships and 52 conference or division championships in basketball, tennis, and golf. The 1987 Patriot softball team competed in the national championship games almost winning 1 - 0. Francis Marion graduate and women's basketball superstar Pearl Moore holds the all-time women's college scoring record with 4,061 points - - - and she's the 3rd highest scorer in men's and women's collegiate basketball. Pearl's record-setting basketball is displayed in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Sylvia Hatchell is a home-grown women's basketball coaching legend, starting at Byrnes Academy (now "The Bynes Schools") progessing to coaching the Patriots for 11 seasons until moving into the ACC where she leads the UNC women's basketball program at Chapel Hill. Five former Patriot basketball players are playing in the professional ranks. In 1998 and 1999, the Patriots captured the Peach Belt Conference Commissioner's Cup" as the best all-around athletics program in the conference.
FLORENCE CIVIC CENTER . . . a 3 time recipient of the Prime Site Award! A "something for everyone" range of entertainment, including the Florence Symphony Orchestra, Ringling Brothers Circus, Amy Grant & Vince Gill, Disney On Ice, professional hockey, motor sports, Monster Trucks, and even "professional" wrestling. The Florence Civic Center has been recognized as one of the top entetianment and convention venues in America.
FLORENCE FAMILY YMCA . . . The YMCA builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities! The YMCA has more than 5,500 members and about 2,000 children a year participate in a wide variety of programs, including basketball, swimming, soccer, baseball, flag football, Tae Kwon Do, arts and crafts programs, and "home school" physical education classes. The annual "Father Daughter Dance" is a community favorite, too! The YMCA started in Florence on January 26, 1912, and continues to grow. In fact, the 2001 "Building for the Future" campaign drive showed community's strong support of the YMCA, enabling the facilities to double in size and and funding the expandion of several popular family-oriented programs.
